19th October: International Gin and Tonic Day
On October 19th, International Gin and Tonic Day recognizes of the world’s most famous drinks. Enjoyed the world over, this simple cocktail takes only moments to create.
Gin and tonics have been substantially a British drink for the longest time. As a staple among the list of amazing cocktails out there, gin and tonics have a high bitterness to it, but it dies down with lime and sugar to make it palatable for most people. Whether you order it at a bar or make it at home, gin and tonics deserve their day to be celebrated. The drink was founded in India when the British East India Company reigned the country. The Scottish doctor, George Cleghorn, used quinine to treat malaria in India.
In some countries (e.g. UK), gin and tonic is also marketed pre-mixed in single-serving cans. In the United States, most bars use “soda out of a gun that in no way, shape, or form resembles quinine water”, according to bartender Dale DeGroff. To get a real gin and tonic, DeGroff recommends specifying bottled tonic. Alternatively, one can add tonic syrup to soda water.
